Sports Thematic Unit

Sports Theme

Badminton- We introduced different types of sports this month and since badminton is one of them. We decided to play an easier version of badminton. We made our own paper plate rackets with drum sticks. Then used balloons as our shuttlecock. Then we were ready to go! It was great workout for the kids!

Frisbee- This was also an easy craft and all we need is some paper plates. I handed each child 2 paper plate and ask them to design them however they want. We had some great designers in the class :) Then I attached two paper plates together and the kids were all very excited when it was time to play with their Frisbee outside!

Outing- Since we're learning about Sports this month, our outing was to the Tien Mu Sports park. It's a great park with many playgrounds and the children were all very excited. We played some soccer and had a relay race! We were very lucky because the weather was wonderful that day! :)

Volleyball- This was the Kangaroo's class' first time playing volley ball. We set up the net in our outdoor playground and we used the beach ball instead of the real volleyball, because I figured it would be easier for kids' to play. This class is pretty athletic, they did pretty good on their try! :)

Baseball song-We've been singing many sports related songs this month and one of the popular one amongst is “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”. Great song for this theme!

Football Player Craft-I think this is one of the cutest craft I've done with the kids this year. I saw this idea on Pinterest and I thought I had to make it with the kids and they all loved it. We painted styrofoam balls as helmets and I took pictures of each child and asked them to show a mean and tough-looking face as a football player. Then glued the Styrofoam ball to a milk bottle. I cut out the football jersey for the kids and they picked their favorite number to put on the jersey. We also added hands and a football in the end! I loved how they turned out!

Flipping the egg (Game)- This was a game we played to practice our sentence patterns in the sports theme “What are they playing?” “They are playing____”. I asked two kids to come up to play and they were supposed to flip over the eggs and look at the pictures on the back and practice “They are playing _____.” They had fun flipping the eggs with the spatula.

Baseball Pinata- Pinata is always a fun game for the class. I made the baseball pinata with balloon, newspaper and white glue. I mixed the white glue with water and then dipped the newspaper in the mixture and glued it onto the balloon. Then waited for a day or two to dry and painted a baseball. I put some cookies and snack inside the pinata. The children had a great time trying to break the pinata with the stick and get the snack inside.

Toys Thematic Unit

Toys Theme

1. Balloon Game: We learned about different types of toys and balloon was one of our vocabulary words. Balloons are always a popular toy amongst the kids. I taped a paper plate to a drumstick and the children were asked to keep the balloon up in the air. The winner is the one who can keep the balloon up in the air for the longest period of time. ^^

2. Car Race with Paper plates: I cut out some paper cars and handed them out to each child in the car race. Their task was to move the paper toy car from one end to the other end with their paper plates. The trick is not to touch the cars and shake their paper plates, so the wind would bring the cars to the other side. It was quite a fun game!

3. Dog Hand Puppet: When I first saw this idea on Pinterest, I thought it is really cute the kids would like them. Then I found out that these hand puppets are really easy to make and you can make different animals as well. I used an A4 sized construction paper and folded vertically into 3 equal parts. Then sealed it with tape. Then I fold in half and then half. I did this part for the kids and the kids put on the eyes, nose and ears for the puppet. They looked really cute~ :)

4. Fish Kite: I've never made a kite before but this paper bag kite seemed quite fun to make. I found a fish coloring page and asked the kids to color them in and glued onto the brown paper bags. Then they attached colorful tissue paper at the end of the paper bags and decorated them with some stickers. Then I cut holes and attached yarn to the bag. This took a little longer, but the end result was great! :)

Now it's time to fly our kites! The kids got a bit tired from running :)

5. Robot Craft: We made an easy robot craft with silver paper and crayons and googly eyes. I cut out different shapes from the silver paper and handed each kid 2 shapes for the robot's head and body. Then they glued on the eyes and mouth and drew on their own arms and legs. ^^ I love how they turned out!

6. Pinwheel craft- This was a simple craft and all you need is a piece of paper (square), split pins and a straw. I asked the kids to color the piece of paper on both sides and everyone could have their own designs. Then I cut from each corner to the center but don't cut it all the way, leaving about 3 cm. Next, I hold punched the corners and the center and folded the corners to the middle and attached a split pin and a straw in the back. Then our Pinwheel project was complete! :)

    7.Pom-Pom Shooter Game:
This was such a fun and easy game and it takes about 5 minutes to prepare for this game. I needed a paper cup, balloon, Pom-Poms and tape. I cut a hole at the bottom of the paper cup.

And then I cut the balloon so it has a bigger opening.

Then I stretched the balloon to cover the bottom of the paper cup. I used tape to secure the balloon.

Then I put a Pom Pom inside and the Pom-Pom shooter is done!

All you need to do is pull the balloon from the bottom and the Pom Pom will shoot out and you can try to catch it!

The kids had a lot of fun playing with the Pom Pom shooter! I had a lot of fun playing with it too!

     8. Cooking Class (Teddy Bear) - Cooking class is always the kids' favorite class. We've been learning about different types of toys this month, and we learned about Teddy Bears, so we made our own teddy bears with bread, Strawberry jam/Chocolate spread, bananas and Craisins. The kids loved it!

Making Pigs with Play dough- Since we're learning about toys this month and the kids love playing with play dough, so we made little pigs with play dough. Some kids needed a little help with it but every pig looked very unique. We loved how the pigs turned out!

Teddy Bear Pinata-I made a teddy bear pinata with my class and filled the pinata with some cookies and snack. The kids had a blast breaking the pinata with a stick and getting the snack inside!! :)
